A wide range of services dedicated to women’s health care are offered at the Women’s Clinic and Obstetrical (OB) department, located at the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center (CNMC). Together, these areas provide women of all ages with comprehensive gynecology, obstetrics and family planning in a safe, therapeutic environment.
The Women’s Clinic and OB department combine personalized care with advances in technology to provide high-quality medical services. Our teams of experienced, compassionate professionals share the common goal of ensuring that the Chickasaw Nation is the first choice in women’s health care.
We Provide
The team specializes in caring for expectant and new mothers, and their babies. The care team includes board-certified OB/GYN physicians, certified nurse-midwives, pediatricians, anesthesia providers, registered nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers, medical family therapists and support staff. Services include, but are not limited to, the following:
Women’s Clinic:
- Well-woman care, including cancer prevention (pap smear, colonoscopy, endometrial biopsy, cryotherapy, mammogram referral)
- Family planning services: prenatal care, breastfeeding education, post-partum care, infertility and elective sterilization
- Hormone therapy evaluation and treatment
- Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screening and treatment
- Incontinence evaluation and treatment
- Pelvic organ prolapse
OB Triage
Patients who are more than 20 weeks pregnant and have a concern or think they are in labor, should call or check in at OB Triage. Care providers will determine whether they can be released or admitted for labor observation.
TeamBirth Initiative
- Like many other delivering hospitals in Oklahoma, Chickasaw Nation Medical Center implemented the TeamBirth Initiative to improve patient satisfaction and safety and to reduce common fears and concerns when having a baby.
- Your wishes and expectations are communicated to the care team with huddles and shared planning boards.
- You have the opportunity to share thoughts about your delivery experience. This feedback will allow us to adjust practices to best suit the needs of our patients.
- This initiative is supported by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative.
Labor and Delivery
- Maternal and fetal monitoring equipment is utilized to ensure the safety of mother and baby throughout the labor experience.
- Patients may be introduced to other members of the team, including an anesthesiologist, to assist with multimodal pain management options.
- Our care team will utilize the TeamBirth communication approach to allow you to share your preferences and expectations with all those involved.
- The TeamBirth shared planning boards are in each room to display your wishes as well as the plan of care.
- Mother and baby stay in labor and delivery for approximately two hours after the birth for observation and recovery. Once mother and baby are both doing well, they will move to a postpartum room located on the same unit.
- If baby requires additional support after birth, we provide a special care nursery where a pediatrician and nursing staff will evaluate and care for the newborn.
- Family and friends are welcome anytime in the labor room with the mother’s consent. All visitors must present the patient’s first and last name to be allowed entrance to the unit.
- Flash photography is welcome in the labor and delivery room. For safety purposes, video photography is only allowed before birth and after mother and baby are deemed stable.
Mother/Baby Room
- We provide “couplet care” which means that mother and baby will be together in a private room for most of the day with minimal separation. Being with baby promotes bonding and allows a mother to become familiar with the way in which her little one communicates needs.
- If baby needs to be examined in a different location, the mother is welcome to accompany the baby.
- Please ask any personnel who transfers baby out of the room for their identification. Their badge should be visible. If there is any doubt about the baby being transferred, refuse the transfer and ask to speak to the charge nurse.
Baby-Friendly Designation
- CNMC is a Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) designated facility. This means we offer breastfeeding support in an environment that best facilitates the mother’s success in accomplishing her breastfeeding goals.
- We have lactation services available in the facility and all nurses are skilled in providing breastfeeding support and education.
- Artificial nipples such as pacifiers are not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics while breastfeeding is established. They are not routinely provided to patients.
Expected Length of Stay
- Women who have uncomplicated vaginal deliveries should plan on a minimum hospital stay of 24-48 hours.
- If there are medical conditions requiring further observation and treatment, the medical provider will discuss the plan of care with the mother.
- Women who have delivered by cesarean section will typically stay a minimum of 48 hours, dependent upon medical conditions determined by the provider.
- Visitors are welcome from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. To protect patient information, visitors are asked not to stand in hallways or near the nurses’ station. Visitors may stay in our designated waiting rooms or the patient’s hospital room.
- Screenings: The baby will receive screenings before discharge. These will take place at the bedside and include hearing, metabolic and jaundice screenings.
- Circumcision: The decision to circumcise a baby boy is the parent’s choice. A pediatrician can discuss the risks and benefits of circumcision before a decision is made. All circumcisions will take place in the pediatric clinic upon appointment following discharge from the OB unit.
